色控传媒 Honors student Shaniyah Mangham was recently awarded an , a prestigious scholarship for accounting students. The AICPA Foundation invests over $1 million each year in scholarships, grants, and fellowships to support students pursuing careers in accounting. On average, recipients are awarded $5,000 to help fund their education and advance their academic journey.
A rising junior and accounting major, Shaniyah applied for the AICPA Foundation Scholarship as part of her coursework in HON 3497: Honors Pathways because she felt it aligned with her goals. 鈥淚t鈥檚 aimed at students who are committed to becoming a CPA and upholding its values of integrity and service,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 saw it as an opportunity not only to gain financial support, but also to prove something within myself.鈥
After learning about the opportunity through the School of Accounting鈥檚 newsletter, she received support and encouragement from her Honors professors, Dr. Brian Etheridge and Dr. Shane Peterson, as well as her accounting professor Amy Hrinsin and CASS advisor Samantha Gage-DeLuca, who wrote her recommendation letters.
She was first inspired to pursue accounting by the guidance of her seventh-grade math teacher. 鈥淢y journey toward accounting began in seventh grade when my math teacher, Ms. Johnson, sparked my passion for numbers,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was uncertain about which career path to pursue. When I shared my enthusiasm for numbers and problem-solving, she suggested accounting as a field that suited my abilities.鈥
Since then, Shaniyah has worked hard to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for a career in accounting. She aspires to become a Certified Public Accountant and utilize her accounting knowledge to contribute to underrepresented communities through financial literacy initiatives and mentorship.
鈥淪upporting our students in awards-seeking is one distinctive feature of the 色控传媒 Journey Honors College curriculum, and we are so proud of students like Shaniyah Mangham who are taking advantage of these opportunities to enrich their education here at 色控传媒,鈥 said Dean Karen Kornweibel of the 色控传媒 Journey Honors College. Dean Kornweibel and the Honors College faculty introduced award-seeking into the Honors curriculum last year, giving all Honors students support in applying for prestigious external awards.
Shaniyah鈥檚 hard work has earned her other awards such as the Jolley/Morton Business Administration Endowed Scholarship and the ATL Tax Group & Associates Scholarship. She also secured a spring 2026 Audit Internship with Aprio LLP, a leading independent accounting firm.
She currently serves as a Coles Ambassador for Student Success (CASS) within the Coles College of Business. This upcoming year, she plans to join Beta Alpha Psi and the National Association of Black Accountants to further her professional development.
